Attorney General Ken Paxton and Senator John Cornyn are locked in a runoff battle that has all the makings of a political earthquake. Former President Donald Trump has thrown his considerable weight behind Paxton, labeling the longtime incumbent Cornyn as "very disloyal" in language that leaves little room for interpretation.

This is not just another primary contest. This is a referendum on the soul of the Republican Party in America's second-largest state.

Cornyn has served Texas in the Senate for more than two decades, building a reputation as a conservative stalwart who knows how to navigate the corridors of power. He warns that should Paxton emerge victorious, Democrats will unleash what he calls "an incredible tsunami" of campaign funds aimed at flipping the seat. It is a calculated message designed to make Republican primary voters think twice about electability in the general election.

The broader ballot includes other consequential races. Both parties are holding runoffs for Texas Attorney General, and four U.S. House seats hang in the balance. One Democratic congressional runoff has drawn attention for a candidate's controversial social media post suggesting the conversion of an immigration detention facility into a prison for Americans who support Israel, a proposal that raises serious questions about the direction of some elements within the Democratic Party.

But make no mistake, the Paxton-Cornyn contest is the main event. It represents a familiar pattern we have seen play out across America: establishment Republicans facing challenges from candidates who position themselves as more aligned with Trump's vision for the party. Sometimes Trump's endorsement carries the day. Sometimes it does not. Tuesday will provide another data point in understanding just how much sway the former president still commands.

For Cornyn, this represents an unusual position. He has been a reliable conservative vote, but in an era where loyalty to Trump often matters more than voting record, he finds himself fighting for political survival against an attorney general who has made confrontation with the Biden administration a centerpiece of his tenure.
