Trump Warns Texas Governor-Elect on Border Enforcement Plans

Trump Warns Texas Governor-Elect on Border Enforcement Plans

President Donald Trump issued a direct warning Wednesday to Texas Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa, telling reporters her campaign promises to dismantle Operation Lone Star amount to "dangerous interference" with federal immigration enforcement.

The confrontation marks the first major flashpoint between Trump and Hinojosa, who upset Republican Governor Greg Abbott Tuesday night to become the first Democrat to lead Texas in nearly three decades. Hinojosa campaigned on ending Abbott's controversial border security initiative and returning National Guard troops to their home stations.

Trump, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, said Hinojosa's plans would "create chaos at the southern border just when we've finally gotten it under control." He pointed to recent border crossing statistics showing a significant decline since his return to office in January 2025.

Democrats Flip Texas in Historic Upset

Hinojosa's victory Tuesday night shocked political observers nationwide. The Austin state representative defeated Abbott by mobilizing voters in border counties that Trump had flipped to Republican in 2024. Cameron County, along the Mexican border, shifted 40 percentage points to the left compared to the 2024 presidential race.

During her campaign, Hinojosa acknowledged Trump's impact on border security. In an October interview, she stated there was "no question that crossings are way down, and there is no question it is because of President Trump." However, she maintained that Operation Lone Star represented government overreach and militarization of the border.

The Democrat's win hands Trump an unexpected challenge. Texas has served as the president's most reliable partner in border enforcement, with Abbott deploying thousands of National Guard troops and state troopers to the southern border since 2021.

Administration Considers Options

White House sources indicate the administration is exploring ways to maintain border security if Hinojosa follows through on dismantling Operation Lone Star. Options under discussion include increased federal personnel deployments and potential legal action to prevent what Trump characterized as obstruction of federal immigration law.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem met with border patrol sector chiefs Wednesday morning to assess contingency plans. The department has pledged to "fill any gaps" created by state troop withdrawals.

Hinojosa is scheduled to take office in January 2027. Her transition team declined to comment on Trump's warning, saying only that the governor-elect "looks forward to working constructively with all partners on border security."

Conservative analysts warn the dispute could escalate into a constitutional showdown over states' rights and federal immigration authority. Texas Republicans have already signaled plans to challenge any moves by Hinojosa to interfere with federal enforcement operations.
