Trump Rallies Syracuse Crowd Behind Blakeman's NY Governor Bid
President holds packed arena event to boost Republican's underdog campaign against Hochul, highlighting congestion pricing and affordability concerns.
President Donald Trump held a packed rally Friday night at Syracuse's Oncenter arena to boost Republican Bruce Blakeman's underdog campaign to unseat New York Governor Kathy Hochul. The appearance marked Trump's first major New York campaign event since Blakeman secured the GOP nomination following Representative Elise Stefanik's withdrawal from the race earlier this year.
Trump told the crowd of several thousand supporters that Blakeman represents New York's best chance to reverse what he called failed Democratic leadership on crime, affordability, and business climate. The president praised the Nassau County Executive's local governance record, pointing to Blakeman's opposition to congestion pricing and his efforts to streamline county regulations.
Blakeman Gains Unlikely Ally
The Republican received an unexpected endorsement earlier this week when actress Debra Messing, known for her Democratic activism and starring role in "Will & Grace," announced her support for Blakeman over incumbent Hochul. Messing cited rising utility costs, congestion pricing implementation, and New York City's affordability crisis as reasons for her political crossover.
The celebrity backing generated immediate controversy within New York's entertainment industry, with several of Messing's former co-stars publicly questioning her alignment with a Trump-endorsed candidate. Messing defended her decision in a social media post, writing that party loyalty should not trump practical governance concerns affecting millions of New Yorkers.
Hochul Campaign Dismisses Threat
Governor Hochul's team released polling data showing her maintaining a lead over Blakeman, though recent surveys from Siena College indicate the race has tightened considerably since August. Blakeman now trails by single digits in most public polls, running closer to Hochul than Republican Lee Zeldin did at the same point in the 2022 gubernatorial cycle.
Hochul campaign spokesman Jack Sterne told reporters that Trump's involvement demonstrates Blakeman's dependence on MAGA Republicans rather than appeal to moderate New York voters. The governor has emphasized her administration's infrastructure investments and actions against federal immigration enforcement she characterizes as overreach.
Trump Attacks Hochul Record
The president spent much of his hour-long Syracuse speech criticizing Hochul's handling of public transportation, business taxes, and energy policy. Trump contrasted New York's economic struggles with what he described as thriving conditions in Republican-governed states like Florida and Texas that have attracted businesses leaving the Empire State.
Blakeman pledged to eliminate the controversial congestion pricing scheme if elected, calling it a tax on working families who have no viable alternative to driving into Manhattan. He also promised to review New York's bail reform laws, which Republicans blame for increased crime rates in urban areas.
The November matchup will test whether Trump's endorsement remains a political asset in a state he lost by double digits in 2024. With just weeks until Election Day, both campaigns are pouring resources into suburban counties that traditionally determine statewide outcomes in New York.
