Senate Majority Leader John Thune and conservative senators reached an agreement with Trump to set aside both the SAVE Act and a related budget resolution that had divided the Republican conference. The move came after Thune repeatedly told the White House he lacked the votes to pass the legislation in its current form.

September Strategy Emerges

Under the new plan, Republican senators will attempt to advance portions of the SAVE America Act as part of a broader budget package when they return to Washington in September. The combined measure would fund the ongoing Iran war operations and replenish Pentagon accounts while incorporating Trump's election integrity provisions.

Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, confirmed the shift came at Trump's direction. "Obviously, with the president at his direction, this is what he wants to do," Johnson told reporters after late-night meetings with White House officials and Senate conservatives who had threatened to block the original vote.

Thune Relationship Under Scrutiny

Trump defended his working relationship with Thune despite weeks of public pressure on the majority leader to advance the SAVE Act before recess. "We have no disconnect, we have a good relationship," Trump said, while emphasizing he finds passage of the voting bill provisions "very important."

The delay represents a tactical retreat for Trump, who had repeatedly demanded Senate action on the SAVE America Act during campaign rallies and public appearances. The bill includes new voter identification requirements and election security measures that Trump has promoted as essential safeguards against fraud.

Budget Resolution Also Shelved
