Democratic Socialists of America co-chair Megan Romer doubled down on the far-left group's call to abolish the U.S. Senate during a Fox News Sunday appearance, confirming a sweeping agenda that includes eliminating ICE, borders, and core American institutions.

Host Shannon Bream presented Romer with a list of DSA policy positions and asked for simple true-or-false confirmations. The co-chair embraced nearly all of them without qualification, including the proposal to dismantle the Senate entirely.

Senate Has No Real Purpose, DSA Leader Claims

"The Senate has no real purpose but to entrench bad ideas and block progress," Romer said when asked about the group's position. "It's an anti-democratic institution that gives disproportionate power to small states and prevents the will of the majority from being enacted."

The DSA has grown into the largest socialist organization in U.S. history, claiming more than 120,000 members as of July 2026. The group's expanding influence has alarmed Republicans and moderate Democrats ahead of the November midterm elections.

Romer's Fox News interview quickly spread across social media, with conservatives highlighting the exchange as evidence of the radical direction of the modern left. The DSA's positions go far beyond expanding government programs into calls for fundamentally restructuring or eliminating foundational American institutions.

Abolish ICE, Borders, and More

In addition to abolishing the Senate, Romer confirmed the DSA supports eliminating Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ending border controls, and adopting open immigration policies. She described current immigration enforcement as "racist" and "incompatible with human rights."

The group also backs eliminating private health insurance, nationalizing major industries, and implementing a federal jobs guarantee. Romer framed these policies as necessary steps toward "economic democracy" and ending what she called the "dictatorship of capital."

Legal Insurrection noted that the DSA co-chair was "done hiding the ball" and willing to openly advocate for positions that mainstream Democratic politicians typically avoid endorsing in public. The frank admissions gave Republicans fresh ammunition for attack ads portraying Democrats as too far left.

Growing Influence Sparks Bipartisan Alarm

The DSA's membership has surged in recent years, driven largely by younger voters frustrated with economic inequality and climate change. The group endorsed Bernie Sanders twice for president and counts several sitting members of Congress as members or allies.

Former Representative Jamaal Bowman was a DSA member before losing his seat in the 2024 primary. The group has faced internal debates over whether to maintain ties with elected officials who compromise on core positions or take votes that contradict DSA principles.

Political analysts say the DSA's growth represents one of the most significant shifts in American politics since the Civil War. The movement's call to abolish foundational institutions like the Senate and ICE goes well beyond traditional Democratic policy positions.

Republicans are seizing on Romer's interview to argue that Democrats have moved too far left and are embracing socialist ideas that threaten American prosperity and security. Democrats face pressure to distance themselves from the DSA's most radical proposals while trying not to alienate the energized progressive base that the group represents.

With Trump's approval ratings in the low 30s and Republicans defending narrow congressional majorities, the DSA's rising profile could become a defining issue in the final months of the midterm campaign.
