Raskin Vows to Subpoena Trump Family if Democrats Win Power
House Judiciary ranking member targets business deals and alleged corruption, escalating partisan warfare over congressional oversight investigations.
House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin openly threatened to subpoena members of President Trump's family if Democrats recapture congressional majorities in November, escalating partisan tensions over potential oversight investigations. The Maryland Democrat specifically mentioned probing lucrative business deals involving Trump family members, including Donald Trump Jr.'s venture capital firm and crypto investments.
Raskin made the remarks during media appearances focused on Democrats' investigative agenda should they win control. The veteran congressman, who led impeachment efforts during Trump's first term, signaled his party would target alleged corruption and self enrichment by Trump and his family. Of particular interest are Trump linked cryptocurrency firms and Donald Trump Jr.'s 1789 Capital, according to statements Raskin made to reporters in late September.
Lawfare Fund Investigation Already Underway
Democrats have already moved to subpoena administration officials behind what they characterize as Trump's $1.8 billion taxpayer funded slush fund for allies and supporters. Raskin announced plans in May to compel acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and other Justice Department officials to testify about the controversial fund, which provides payments to individuals claiming they were victims of government weaponization.
The ranking member has repeatedly slammed what he calls the GOP's sham investigations while promising thorough Democratic probes of Trump administration conduct. Raskin's proposed investigations would include business dealings by Trump's son in law Jared Kushner and Trump's own business operations during his presidency. The congressman argues such oversight would help craft anti corruption legislation.
Pattern of Announced Investigations
Raskin has spent months publicly outlining potential Democratic investigations should his party win back power. In August, he launched an investigation into the Trump administration's prosecution of U.S. Olympian David Hearn over a botched Reflecting Pool renovation. He also probed what he termed bogus campus antisemitism investigations by the Department of Justice.
Republicans have denounced Raskin's threats as political payback and warned Democrats would weaponize congressional oversight powers to harass Trump and his family. Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso said a Democrat controlled Senate would block every Trump nominee and launch endless investigations designed to paralyze the administration. The battle over potential oversight investigations has become a major campaign issue as both parties seek to energize their bases heading into the midterm elections.
