Never Trump Republican Jolly Wins Florida Democratic Primary for Governor
Former GOP congressman David Jolly secured Florida's Democratic gubernatorial nomination, setting up a general election clash with Trump-backed Rep. Byron Donalds.
Former Republican congressman David Jolly won Florida's Democratic gubernatorial primary Tuesday, securing his party's nomination despite never having been a Democrat until switching parties in 2024. The Never-Trump Republican now faces an uphill battle against Trump-endorsed Representative Byron Donalds in November's general election.
Jolly raised nearly $6.4 million for his campaign, a significant war chest for a Florida Democrat, and positioned himself as the candidate who could appeal to disaffected Republicans turned off by Trump's influence over the GOP. His victory in the Democratic primary marks one of the most unusual political transformations of the 2026 cycle.
From Republican to Democratic Nominee
Jolly represented Florida's 13th Congressional District from 2014 to 2017 as a Republican before leaving Congress and becoming one of the GOP's most vocal Trump critics. He formally switched his party registration to Democrat in early 2024, citing the Republican Party's embrace of Trump and what he called authoritarian tendencies within the conservative movement.
The former GOP congressman defeated a crowded Democratic field by running on his experience in Congress and his appeal to moderate and independent voters. Florida has closed primaries, meaning only registered Democrats could choose the party's nominee, but Jolly is already looking to court independents and disgruntled Republicans in the general election.
Facing Byron Donalds in November
Jolly's general election opponent, Byron Donalds, cruised to victory in the Republican gubernatorial primary with Trump's full backing and a war chest exceeding $100 million. Donalds secured Trump's endorsement before even announcing his run and would become Florida's first Black governor if elected in November.
No Democrat has won a Florida governor's election since Lawton Chiles in 1994, and no Democrat has won any statewide race in Florida since Nikki Fried was elected agriculture commissioner in 2018. The Democratic Party's struggles in the Sunshine State have only deepened during the Trump era, with Republicans now holding every statewide office and both chambers of the legislature by wide margins.
Strategic Gamble
Democrats are betting that Jolly's Republican pedigree and Never-Trump credentials will help him peel away moderate suburban voters who supported Ron DeSantis but remain uncomfortable with Trump's influence. However, Jolly's party switch may also alienate progressive Democrats who question his commitment to Democratic priorities after spending his entire political career as a Republican.
The race represents a test of whether anti-Trump Republicans can find a political home in the Democratic Party and whether that coalition is sufficient to overcome Florida's rightward shift. With Donalds backed by Trump's political operation and flush with cash, Jolly faces long odds in his quest to break the Democratic losing streak in statewide Florida races.
