Kevin Hern Wins Oklahoma Senate Primary and Vows to Push SAVE Act
The Trump-backed congressman won Oklahoma's GOP Senate primary and says voter citizenship verification is the top concern he hears from constituents.
Rep. Kevin Hern cruised to victory in Oklahoma's Republican Senate primary Tuesday, securing Trump's endorsement and a clear path to the general election in the deeply red state.
Hern, known among colleagues as the "McCongressman" for his background owning McDonald's franchises, immediately turned his attention to the stalled SAVE Act, telling reporters it's the issue voters ask him about most on the campaign trail.
SAVE Act Takes Center Stage
The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act would require documentary proof of United States citizenship before anyone can register to vote in federal elections. The House passed the measure, but it has languished in the Senate despite Republican majorities in both chambers.
Hern expressed frustration that GOP senators have not moved the bill forward. "It's what I hear about everywhere I go in Oklahoma," he said. "People want to know why we can't get this done when Republicans control Congress."
The bill would prohibit states from accepting voter registration applications unless the applicant presents documentation proving citizenship. Critics argue this effectively eliminates most online and mail registration methods, while supporters say it's a common-sense protection against non-citizen voting.
The Senate Stalemate
As of June 2026, the Senate officially failed to advance the SAVE Act past procedural hurdles. The White House has championed the legislation, maintaining a dedicated page at whitehouse.gov promoting the measure.
Opponents claim the fraud concerns driving the bill are unproven and that the real goal is making it harder for eligible voters to register. Vote.org and other advocacy groups have organized against the measure, arguing it would disenfranchise legitimate voters who lack easy access to citizenship documents.
Proponents counter that requiring proof of citizenship is a basic election security measure. They point to polls showing broad public support for ensuring only citizens participate in federal elections.
Hern Heads to Easy November Victory
Oklahoma's partisan makeup makes the general election largely a formality for Hern. The seat opened when Governor Kevin Stitt appointed Alan Armstrong to fill it temporarily until November.
Hern defeated a crowded Republican field that included Sean Buckner, meteorologist Gary England, Nick Hankins, and Brian Ragain. His dominant primary performance and Trump's backing position him as a leading conservative voice in the incoming Senate class.
The congressman has served Oklahoma's 1st Congressional District since 2018, building a reputation as a fiscal conservative and strong Trump ally. His Senate campaign will likely continue emphasizing election security and the SAVE Act as he seeks to pressure leadership to bring the bill back for consideration.
