Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton challenged Democrat Xavier Becerra to commit to six debates before the November election, accusing the former health secretary of avoiding direct confrontation with voters about his record and policy proposals.

Hilton, a British born political adviser and former Fox News host, advanced to the general election alongside Becerra in June's top two primary after finishing second with 28 percent of the vote. Becerra, who served as U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary under President Biden before launching his campaign, led the crowded primary field with 26 percent.

Debate Terms and Becerra Response

The Hilton campaign proposed six debates across California's major media markets, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento, Fresno, and the Inland Empire. The challenge, issued through a formal letter last week according to the Los Angeles Times, requests Becerra confirm his participation by August 15th to allow time for venue and media arrangements.

Becerra's campaign has not publicly committed to the six debate format. Campaign spokesman declined to comment on specific debate numbers when contacted by reporters, stating only that the candidate looks forward to engaging with voters throughout the fall campaign.

Polling Shows Wide Becerra Lead

Recent polling suggests Becerra holds a commanding advantage heading into the general election. An Orange County Register poll found 82 percent of Democrats backing Becerra while 94 percent of Republicans support Hilton. More critically for the Republican candidate, the survey showed Becerra leading overall by double digits in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans by nearly two to one in voter registration.

Republicans have not won a statewide race in California since 2006, when Arnold Schwarzenegger secured reelection as governor. The state has trended increasingly Democratic over the past two decades, with GOP registration falling to historic lows.

Hilton Campaign Strategy

Facing steep odds, Hilton has attempted to position himself as a political outsider willing to challenge Sacramento's entrenched interests. His campaign platform emphasizes cutting state spending, reducing regulatory burdens on businesses, and addressing California's affordability crisis through market based solutions rather than government intervention.

The debate challenge appears designed to force Becerra onto defense over his time in the Biden administration, particularly decisions around COVID era restrictions and healthcare mandates that remain unpopular with California Republicans and some independent voters. Hilton advisers believe extended debate time could expose policy vulnerabilities in Becerra's record.

Whether multiple debates materialize may depend on calculations by both campaigns. Front runners typically prefer fewer debates to avoid gaffes that could narrow their lead, while trailing candidates seek maximum exposure to change the race dynamics.
