Elon Musk has begun pouring money into competitive House and Senate races through his super PAC, marking his first major spending push of the 2026 midterm cycle with more than $800,000 directed to Republican candidates in over a dozen battleground contests.

America PAC, the political action committee Musk launched after helping elect President Trump in 2024, reported the expenditures in late August filings covering direct mail, digital advertising, and voter contact operations. The spending averaged roughly $70,000 per day and signals the tech billionaire's plan to play a significant role in determining House and Senate control.

Targeting Competitive Races

Musk's super PAC focused its initial spending on Senate contests in Texas and Maine, two of the year's most expensive races. In Texas, the PAC spent $180,000 supporting Republican incumbent Senator Ted Cruz against Democratic challenger Colin Allred, a former NFL player and congressman.

The Maine Senate race drew $150,000 from America PAC, backing Republican challenger Austin Theriault against Democratic Senator Angus King. King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, has held the seat since 2013 and represents a key target for Republicans seeking to expand their narrow Senate majority.

House races absorbed the remaining spending, spread across competitive districts in California, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Arizona. The PAC targeted districts where Republicans defeated Democratic incumbents in 2024 or where open seats created opportunities for pickups.

Long-Term Commitment Signaled

Political strategists view the early spending as a test run for a much larger effort. Musk has reportedly told allies he plans to spend at least $100 million through America PAC by Election Day, a figure that would make him one of the cycle's largest individual donors.

The spending comes after a reported rift between Musk and Trump earlier this year over technology policy and government contracts. The two appear to have reconciled, with Musk attending recent Trump rallies and promoting Republican candidates on his social media platform.

Analysis by Americans for Tax Fairness found that billionaire donors have already contributed more than $433 million to the 2026 midterms, with nearly 80 cents of every dollar backing Republicans. Musk's spending places him among the top individual contributors alongside Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, and Democratic megadonor George Soros.

PAC Operation Details

America PAC operates as a super PAC, allowing unlimited contributions and spending but prohibiting direct coordination with candidates. The organization can accept donations from individuals, corporations, and unions without the restrictions that apply to traditional campaign committees.

Federal filings show the PAC employing a strategy focused on voter mobilization rather than television advertising. Most of the August spending went to direct mail pieces highlighting Republican candidates' positions on taxes, energy policy, and border security.

Republicans praised Musk's involvement as crucial to maintaining their House majority and expanding their Senate edge. Democrats warned that billionaire spending threatens to drown out grassroots voices and gives wealthy donors outsized influence over election outcomes.

The spending data covers only through August 31. September filings, due in early October, will reveal whether Musk accelerated his political investment as Election Day approaches. Political observers expect the tech mogul to ramp up spending significantly in the final weeks of the campaign.
