DHS Secretary Mullin Fires Back at Screaming Democrat in Heated Hearing

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin delivered a pointed rebuke to Rep. Rosa DeLauro on Thursday after the Connecticut Democrat erupted during a House Appropriations subcommittee hearing. "You should be put in your place," Mullin told her as the hearing devolved into shouting.

The confrontation began when DeLauro, the ranking member of the panel, attempted to lecture Mullin about the Trump administration's immigration enforcement policies. She referenced family separations and invoked the Trump family during her questioning.

The Exchange That Went Viral

Mullin interrupted DeLauro's questioning to point out that 450,000 children were lost during the Biden administration. "And you didn't say a word about it," he added.

"Mr. Secretary, do not interrupt," DeLauro replied while gesturing toward Mullin. The purple-haired Democrat then turned to the chairman, shouting "Chairman, could you put him in his place!?"

Mullin did not back down. "You should be put in your place," he fired back.

Video of the exchange spread rapidly across social media. Conservative commentators praised Mullin for refusing to be lectured by Democrats who ignored immigration problems under the previous administration.

A Pattern of Heated Hearings

This was not the first time Mullin has faced hostile questioning from Democratic lawmakers. Earlier this month, Rep. Al Green had an apparent meltdown during a separate committee hearing, calling Mullin a "racist" before telling him to "shut up."

Democrats have repeatedly clashed with Mullin over border security, enforcement priorities, and the administration's deportation efforts. The DHS secretary, a former Republican senator and state wrestling champion, has consistently refused to be cowed by aggressive questioning.

Senator critics have called his approach "insane" and accused his department of reckless spending. Mullin has defended every major policy decision while pushing back against what he characterizes as bad-faith attacks.

The Substance Behind the Theatrics

Thursday's hearing was ostensibly about the Department of Homeland Security's budget. DeLauro wanted to discuss child welfare concerns related to immigration enforcement. Mullin wanted to discuss the failures of the previous administration.

Neither side gave ground. The hearing ended without resolution on the policy questions that prompted it.

For conservatives, Mullin's willingness to fight back represents exactly what they want from Trump administration officials. Too many Republican appointees in past administrations accepted abuse from Democratic lawmakers without responding. Mullin clearly has no intention of following that playbook.
