Former President Joe Biden appeared confused about where to exit the stage Saturday night after delivering remarks at a Maryland Democratic gala, the second such incident in less than two weeks.

Video from the Montgomery County Democratic Committee event shows Biden finishing his speech and then pausing, uncertain which direction to walk. He appeared to seek guidance before eventually finding his way off stage.

A Pattern Emerges

The Maryland incident follows a similar moment at the opening ceremony for the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago on June 18. At that event, Biden was left standing alone on stage after former President Obama and former First Lady Jill Biden had already departed.

Conservative commentator Megyn Kelly described the Chicago footage as "infuriating," noting that Biden appeared confused and asked "Where's my granddaughter?" while remaining on stage.

Biden, who turned 83 last November, withdrew from the 2024 presidential race after a disastrous debate performance raised questions about his mental acuity. He had previously insisted he would seek a second term.

Still Attacking Trump

Despite the navigational difficulties, Biden used his Maryland speech to criticize his successor. The former president defended his record in office and attacked President Trump's policies on multiple fronts.

Biden specifically targeted Trump's plans to refurbish the reflecting pool on the National Mall, calling the project misguided. The attack echoed the partisan messaging Democrats have employed since losing the 2024 election.

The Maryland Democratic faithful welcomed Biden warmly, even as the visual of their former standard-bearer struggling to exit a stage reinforced concerns that led to his withdrawal from the race.

Biden's cognitive abilities became a central issue during the 2024 campaign. His June debate against Trump, during which he appeared to lose his train of thought multiple times, ended his presidential bid within weeks.

Since leaving office, Biden has maintained a relatively low profile but has emerged periodically for Democratic events. Each public appearance is now scrutinized for signs of decline.

The White House previously dismissed questions about Biden's fitness as politically motivated attacks. But the accumulation of video evidence made it increasingly difficult to wave away concerns.

Vice President Kamala Harris replaced Biden atop the Democratic ticket after his withdrawal. She lost the general election to Trump in November, giving Republicans full control of Washington.
