Maryland Senator Angela Alsobrooks leveled scathing criticism at the Trump administration Wednesday, declaring the president's second term has been "an unmitigated disaster" for American families struggling with rising costs and economic uncertainty.

Speaking before a gathering of Democratic lawmakers, Alsobrooks blamed Republican control of the White House and both chambers of Congress for what she described as policies that continue to push the American dream further out of reach for working families. The first-term senator pointed to a recent Joint Economic Committee report showing Maryland households are spending over $3,000 more annually under Trump's economic agenda.

Economic Pain Hits Home

Alsobrooks has emerged as a consistent voice in challenging the Trump administration's economic record since taking office in January 2025. The Maryland Democrat has repeatedly connected what she calls hemorrhaging job losses to policies that disproportionately hurt Black families and middle-class communities across her state.

During a Senate Banking Committee hearing in June, Alsobrooks criticized the administration's response to affordability concerns, arguing that Trump's policies are "ripping away" access to stable, well-paying jobs and pushing millions into unemployment and underemployment.

The senator's latest remarks come as Democrats work to sharpen their messaging around economic issues ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. With Republicans controlling the presidency, House, and Senate, Alsobrooks and other Democratic lawmakers face the challenge of breaking through unified GOP governance to position themselves as defenders of working families.

Building a Track Record

Alsobrooks made history as Maryland's first Black U.S. senator after defeating former Republican Governor Larry Hogan in a closely watched 2024 race. Before her Senate victory, she served as Prince George's County Executive, where she built a reputation focusing on economic development and public safety issues.

Since arriving in Washington, she has introduced legislation aimed at consumer protection and holding the Trump administration accountable across multiple policy areas. Her criticism has targeted everything from the economy and job losses to what she calls "deeply unserious nominees" and health policy chaos under Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The Maryland lawmaker has also taught a course on leadership at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she has emphasized the importance of public service during turbulent political times.
